The Foundation first presented the Leadership Service Award in 2016. It honors a faculty member who combines service learning with classroom instruction to forge skills and knowledge that students can apply to community leadership opportunities.
Dr. Philip Auter
Professor of Communication and Graduate Program Coordinator
College of Liberal Arts
Hubert Bourgeois Endowed Professorship in Communication
Dr. Philip Auter is the Leadership Service Award recipient for the Eminent Faculty Awards. He serves as a professor and the graduate program coordinator for the Department of Communication. He is also a past recipient of the Dr. Ray P. Authement Excellence in Teaching Award.
During his time at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, service-learning has been a cornerstone of Dr. Auter’s teaching. Courses he has designed have given students the opportunity to collaborate with prominent organizations, including the U.S. Department of Justice and the Bayou Vermilion District. These courses provide students with practical hands-on work experience while also resulting in meaningful community impact. Through these experiences, Dr. Auter hopes to inspire students to continue helping their communities and to give back by paying it forward.
