Gratitude In Action: How One Alumnus Has Translated Her Attitude of Gratitude into a Generous Bequest for the Next Generation of Ragin' Cajuns

Years after alumnus Donna Moore obtained her degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, her decision to support academic and student-life on campus through a charitable bequest, reflects decades of gratitude for the education, connections, and personal growth she received while here.

Donna's journey with the University began in the late 1970s, when it was known as the University of Southwestern Louisiana; a time she remembers with palpable warmth. "I felt like I was home," she recalls, while painting a picture of college grounds alive with beautiful flora, welcoming people, delicious food, and a memorable introduction to boudin.

As a student in the College of Liberal Arts, she was captivated by her psychology and women's history courses, fondly remembering one professor who held class in the intimate setting of her own home. "It was a profound experience for me," Donna shares. "I regularly thought about how much my mom would have enjoyed some of the classes and lectures I was so fortunate to attend." These personal and life-shaping moments, set against the campus backdrop of historic buildings like Mouton and Girard Hall, forged a permanent connection for Donna with UL Lafayette.

She says that deep connection, which is rooted in a lasting sense of gratitude, is the driving force behind her decision to give back. "My time here left an enduring mark on my life, cultivating meaningful relationships and cherished memories that continue to affirm my belief in the goodness of humanity and the richness of life," she says.

Donna’s bequest will establish multiple endowed and non-endowed funds that will support several worthwhile disciplines and student-life offerings at UL Lafayette, including LGBTQ+ studies and student support, gender studies, student research, and the Department of Psychology.

One of her endowed funds will provide emergency relief and financial assistance to students who participate in student organizations that promote a diverse and accepting campus environment; while her scholarship funds will support students who are studying psychology or gender studies. Through her gift, Donna is channeling her passions into a tangible legacy of empowerment and inclusion that will create meaningful impacts for students for years to come.

As a 20-year member of the Krewe of Muses in New Orleans, LA, an avid traveler, and lifelong athlete who has competed around the world in the Gay Games – winning a bronze medal in tennis at the 2006 Chicago Games – Donna has always lived with purpose. Her bequest to the University is a natural extension of that spirit, reflecting her values and life experiences.

Donna's story is a testament to how philanthropy can be used as a powerful tool to secure a brighter future for subsequent generations. She says she hopes her gift inspires others to "pay it forward in their own meaningful way, ensuring that the students of tomorrow have access to opportunities and experiences that will positively shape their lives forever."
